Spending In Ho Chi Minh City

Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City as it is termed today will be the veritable cliche -A shopper's paradise. The principle feature of shopping within the capital of Vietnam is it is tourist oriented, almost anything on offer is supposed for consumption through the hordes of visiting tourists. Having at least an elementary expertise in bargaining would be beneficial here as there are several attention grabbing items displayed, through the usual touristy fare to elegant antiques and souvenirs.

The shops in Ho Chi Minh City or any place else in Vietnam are far from being drab; they are a riot of colour from extensive decorative try to the colorful household goods displayed, the color can be an enticing prospect for tourists. The streets with the city are lined with small outlets selling indigenously produced toys, souvenirs and clothing several of which are very reasonably priced. Shopping in Vietnam can be a combination of small vendors peddling locally made handicrafts to large western style shops selling considerably more up market fare.


The primary open air markets in Ho Chi Minh are Ben Thanh Market, the night time Market and the War surplus market. The biggest of the lot is the Ben Thanh Market, that is instantly identified by the larger clock tower at the traffic circle. It is a large old school open air market with countless narrow alleyways which have store fronts. On account of regular patronage by tourists the market has now morphed into a tourist attraction, many stalls now sell Vietnam t-shits and counterfeit branded jeans, caps and souvenirs.

A night Information mill located almost next to the Ben Thanh Market is usually open after 5.00 pm. This market also includes a few food stalls where tourists may go through some local cuisine and check out a local drink. However, essentially the most interesting market of should be the War Surplus Market; the forex market is oftentimes known as the American Market or "Cho Cu". Many military items left in the bloody American campaign up against the Viet Cong rebels, that ended with large losses of life for sides can be seen here. American war gear for example old military uniforms, GI helmets, US Marine t-shirts and old army knives can be obtained here. This can be a unique destination to visit for collectors and Vietnam War veterans, although the authenticity from the ware is not verified.
